Flywheel was one of the reasons I started writing on Substack. Hope you are back for good.

Congrats on your search! Listen to Lenny's podcast with Phyl Terry and go join a JOb Search Council (phyl.org).

What's the ranking for your pref between these 3? In this market it will prob be easier to go with something closer to what you've done e.g. Product at either big company (prob IC) or Series A (prob manager or exec). I think you can find data oriented companies / product where you can apply your skillset where in those roles. The data science as your next role path seems much harder with maybe less benefit as you mention you have experience and like wearing many hats so going narrow seems a bit off. Just my 2 cents!

Hey! So great to hear from you. You're in the DMV, I think Jana mentioned to me..is that right? If so it would be awesome to catch up.

Yes, great insights. I'll check out those resources today, thanks so much. In terms of the buckets, I think you are right - there is a small segment of companies that I think is well known enough for DS career growth where I feel I'd learn enough, quickly enough for it to make sense. But other than those, I am probably not equipped to have much success at smaller places in that type of role. I do agree that specializing versus staying general is a gamble..but I'm willing to give it a shot if I can land one of these roles. But in parallel, I definitely will be pursuing the other two buckets, and would guess it is more likely I'll end up there after the end of this thing.

Very much enjoyed reading this. I do wonder if a data scientist role at a big company is going to be more fulfilling than a strategy/product role at a big tech company, or if you'd find similar kinds of blockers that may be frustrating. As someone who went from Amazon to a Series A (which then became a B) startup, I personally enjoyed the balance of freedom/structure much better than a large company.

Hey! Thanks for reading!

Yes, I think you are probably right - I think it's the sort of thing I want to try, but I agree there is risk involved. The good thing is nothing has to be forever, and as long as I choose a place where I will feel set up to learn a lot, quickly, I think it will end up being worth it. But it's highly possible I'm way off base there.
